Unstoppable Shots: Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Dirk Nowitzki

7 Jun

Kareem Abdul Jabbar – The Skyhook

In 1969 Kareem bust on the scene and had a reputation as the best collegiate player ever and had big shoes to fill as Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were just about to finish their time in the league. Who knew the next truly great center would arrive so shortly after those 2 legends?

20 seasons later Kareem is the all time leading scorer in history and he did it with the most devastating shot anyone’s ever seen. The Skyhook. Kareem is 7,2 and then you have him turning and jumping off one foot away from the defender to get this shot off. Not only that, the very nature of the shot has him holding the ball high over his head and just flicking it forward with his hand. Once he shoots the ball’s already over 10 feet high! Lefty, with a spin, on the run, with a fake it’s all over kill before he launches that Skyhook.

Dirk Nowitzki – The One Legged Fade Away

Too bad people are just noticing this shot now. Too bad for OKC too. Much like Kareem this unstoppable shot also comes from a 7 footer, this shot has so many elements of difficulty rolled into one, but hey, if it’s practiced who cares. This is a classic fade away shot but Dirk takes a one footed jump that launches him extra distance away from the defender either backward or sideways. Once he jumps the ball is probably 10 feet high and he’s added about 2 or more feet between him and the defender as well. No one can touch it. What always impresses about this shot is that once he jumps he’s leaning back so much that no kind of contest or jump can bother the shot and, he nails it every time. Because of the one foot jump people also can’t even prepare for a block since it does not have the footing of an ordinary shot. One leg, 2 points, nothing but net.
